All of the seed mixes listed below have been tested and approved by NorthCountry Whitetails. We have used most of them for years and know them to be solid reliable products. Some have been grown at our research facility when in the developmental stage. We are proud to have had a hand in their development.

We no longer are handling them directly; instead we are channeling our sales through Amazon where you are assured best pricing and outstanding service. Click on the image below for more information or to order. We are still happy to answer any questions you might have.

 Annual vs. Perennial

The first food plot decision you will need to make is whether you want to plant a perennial plot or an annual one (or a combination of each). Annual plantings typically last only one season.  Perennial food plots last 3-5 years or more. We recommend at least 60% of a property be planted in perennials to provide much needed nutrition during the fawning season and when bucks are growing antlers. The rest can be planted in annuals which are often planted to attract deer to a specific area.

Major Categories of Seed Products:

 Clover and Chicory Products
Clover is the Chevy truck of food plots and should be a part of every wildlife habitat development program.  It is relatively high (25%-35%) in protein and used heavily by whitetails, turkeys and even the occasional bear. Best of all, as a perennial it greens up early in spring and grows well into early winter. It likes moist to wet conditions but doesn’t do well in temperatures over 85° when conditions are droughty. Most clovers should be mowed when they reach 10-12” to stimulate fresh tender growth. A grass specific herbicide applied 1x per year along with mowing broadleaf weeds will keep most clover plots fresh, clean , and productive for 3-5 years.
Adding chicory to clover (see chicory-clover combos) is a great way to hedge hot dry conditions. Chicory sends down a very deep tap root and is relatively drought resistant. It likes hot dry weather and will keep a clover based plot producing forage through the hot dry summer months. Chicory is extremely rich in minerals and has high protein levels as well.

 Brassicas
NorthCountry Whitetails pioneered the use of brassicas in the North. We tested the first food plot seed ever to include brassicas and have been using it ever since. There are many plants sold under the brassicas name including many varieties of turnip and rape which are the most popular varieties. Brassica is an annual so it must be planted every year but when the temps turn cold and frosty nothing beats a field of brassicas.

 Agricultural Crop Based Forages
Annual grains like wheat, oats and rye are especially attractive to whitetails when planted in the fall.  Deer feed aggressively on the green sprouts until they reach 8-12 inches in height or in severe winter weather conditions. Alfalfa is a great dry weather crop and is well used until the first frost.

 Specialty Blends
More and more food plot planters are turning to specialty blends to meet their special needs. Some blends are designed to grow with minimal soil preparation or in less than optimum conditions like shade, excessive dryness or wet conditions. Others are designed to work in acidic soils with less than optimum pH. If you are working with challenging growing conditions these can be very useful. Still others make use of special plants and forbs that are used by food plotters looking to customize their plantings to a particular application or area. Once you have covered you basic food plot requirements with clover based products a little mix and match planting can be fun and add a little something to your property’s appeal.

 Minerals
New York law does not allow us to use mineral (CWD) but many of Neil’s clients in other states are using it and getting results. Increasing mineral intake will go a long way toward growing bigger deer with larger antlers.
